HAWERA GALLOPS

Some Useful Sprinting Dominion Special Service, HAWERA, August 1. The outside of the course proper was available for fast work at Hawcra this morning and some useful sprinting wne accomplished. An overnight trust resulted in the going being fairly heavy. With a big pull in the weights, Student Prince (Sexton) finished too solidly for Gitana Lass (Chaplin) at the close of five . furlongs in 1.13 4-5. Student Prince worked in his usual bold style and he is well forward. He is to have one race on I the flat at the combined hunts' meeting j at New Plymouth and will return to hurd- > ling at Wanganui. Gitana Lass has proved a trifle disappointing of late but may do better when the tracks become firmer. Race Away (Reilly) was under restraint to keep with Vai Pere (Farland) in a two-furlong sprint which occupied 2o 3-5. Race Away has improved a good I deal as a result of his race at Marton re- I cently and he should soon leave the novice I ranks. Vai Pere is progressing favour- 1 ably, though he will probably require plenty of time. O. Cox’s youngsters Bele Cane (Hol- | land) and Mahaina (Sexton) infused plen- | ty of dash Into their tasks when sprinted up the straight. They were accompanied by the Vaals —Airway filly (Ryan) in R. Brough’s stable. The first mentioned, a daughter of Beau Pere—Duck s Egg. is developing into a solid filly and she looks like a good galloper in the making. The other pair are coming to hand nicely. O. Cox has an addition to his string in an upstanding three-year-old filly by Croupier from T’avora, a useful mare trained by Cox several seasons back. The newcomers will carry the colours of Mr. R. Mace, who races Prime Quality. Nothing of a serious nature has yet ' been asked of Diamond Cutter since he j joined H. Scally's stable. He will race | in the joint, interests of his trainer and Mr. A. MeMullian. Race Call. Rnmleh and Veldette are in steady work. The trio appear greatly benefited from their let-ups and they will be on hand for the, spring meetings.
