AMATEUR BILLIARDS

Wellington Provincial Championship

OPENING GAMES PLAYED

Two former champions, S. M. G. Simpson (G.P.O, Social and Literary Club), and W. N. Tucker (Federal Club), provided interesting billiards when the opening games of the Wellington provincial amateur championships were played in Wellington last night. The score was very close throughout tlie game and the decision was in doubt almost to the end. Simpson, from an apparently safe leave, played two fine strokes and from the position he gained ran to points. 300, with Tucker at 209 Simpson’s best, breaks were 24, 48, 31; Tucker's best were 25, 20, 22, 31. S. Moses (G.P.O. Postmen’s Club), who lias previously held the New Zealand and Wellington amateur title, produced his most brilliant form to defeat: F. Harding (St. George). Harding, in his occasional visits, had little time to accustom himself to the conditions, and consequently large breaks did not fall to his cue. Moses, who lost, the title lust, year to G. Peek, should regain it this year if present. form is maintained. Among his best breaks lust night were 58, 27, 31, 38. Peek, incidentally, is not now competing- ~ „ , The final score was: Moses 300, Harding 80. Both games were controlled by Mr J. Meldrum. ~ . , Tonight at 7 o’clock M. Corn (Jewish Chib) will meet It. Butters (Commercial Travellers’ Club). At. 8 p.m. W. J. McMillan (Fire Brigade Club) will meet lu C. Sim (Federal Club).
