WELLINGTON MOTOR CAMP

Duties Of Caretaker

PERCENTAGE OF FEES AS

WAGES

Surprise has been expressed in some quarters at the terms on which the Wellington town clerk has invited tenders for the position of caretaker of the new municipal motor camp in Miramar North. No wages or salary is offered. The caretaker has to make his own wages out of a percentage of camp site fees and the sale of groceries and camp equipment, but he is - also asked to say what sum a month he is prepared to pay for the right to operate a canteen. The schedule of duties for the position states that the caretaker or his assistant must be in attendance continuously from 7 a.m. till 11 p.m. daily, including Sundays. He is to be held* responsible for the checking and custody of all the council property, and must do minor repairs to keep it in good order, and must regularly clean all buildings and structures, as well as maintain order in the camp at all times. He will also have to collect all camp charges and extras as soon as they are due, and all moneys received must be handed to the city treasurer as soon as possible after receipt with the necessary statements. An approved fidelity guarantee policy for a cover of £l5O must be taken out and kept alive by the caretaker.

The caretaker will also be expected to conduct a canteen for the sale of groceries and camp requirements at prices not more than .10 per cent, higher than city prices. tn tendering for the position, each applicant must state: (a) What percentage of the camp fees he requires by way of commission (extras will be excluded from the calculation of commission), and (b) what sum a month he is prepared to pay for the right to operate the canteen. Camp site fees have been fixed at 3/- a day and 15'/- a week. The council will favourably consider renting a site in the camp for a petrol and oil station, but rental will be charged as for a seperate business. The term of the caretaker’s engagement will be monthly for a total of six months, from November 1, 1939. Applicants have to submit details as to age, health, and address (he must live within a quarter of a mile of the camp), and must be able to produce references as to character. Tenders for the position close with the town clerk on August 28. It is understood that already a number of applications for camp sites have been received from different parts of New Zealand. Some of these have been forwarded to the city council through the Automobile Association (Wellington).
