Series Of Depressions In

North-east

Following is the weather report and the forecast, for wind and .seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today:—

General situation: A scries of depressions is passing in the north-east, but an anti-cyclone covers the southern portion of New Zealand. Pressure is falling again over Tasmania. Forecast:— ,

Winds: Moderate to strong southeasterlies predominating north of Greymouth and Kaikoura, of gale force in places from Cook Strait to East Cape and about Taranaki. Variable winds in southern districts with light to moderate easterlies to northeasterlies prevailing. Seas (New Zealand waters) : Rough to high between Kaikoura and East Cape, rough east of the Auckland Peninsula and about Taranaki; elsewhere moderate to rather rough, but decreasing from the south. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong south-easterly to southerly winds and rough seas in the northern portion; moderate south-easterlies in the southern portion, later tending northerly and moderate seas. YESTERDAY’S WEATHER Wellington.—There was a strong and squally wind and the weather was very cold, with, frequent rain and hail showers. The minimum temperature on Sunday night was 35.7 degrees and the maximum yesterday was 45.4 degrees. At 3 p.m. yesterday the temperature was 43 degrees .and the barometer reading was 1019.4 millibars. Palmerston North. —-After heavy overnight, rain and an early-morning frost, the day was overcast and very cold, writh a bleak south-east wind. Wanganui.—Bitterly cold all day. with snow in the early morning; a considerable sea; line in the afternoon, with a strong south-easterly wind. Barometer 1017.6 millibars.

New Plymouth.—-Bright and sunny, with light passing clouds; very cold south-east wind, strong to gale force. Barometer at 5 p.m. 1007.3 millibars. Mastertou. —Showery and overcast during the morning, later clearing, with bright sunshine and light wind from the south. Napier and Hastings. —-A bitterly cold morning with incessant rain and hail, ’ following a seven-degree frost. The afternoon was fine, though overcast, with a stroug, keen soutlirwest wind.

Waipukurau.—Very cold morning, with a heavy hailstorm at noon. Frequent rain during the afternoon, with real midwinter conditions prevailing. Maximum temperature, 41 degrees. Auckland.—Fine with occasional rain, the wind being a moderate southerly. Maximum temperature 51 degrees. Barometric pressure rose slightly, the reading at. 5 p.m. being 29.77 inches, .1008 millibars. Christchurch.— l Overcast, with a slight to moderate south-westerly wind and intermittent, showers. Maximum temperature, 41.5 degrees. Barometer at 5 p.m. 102a.6 millibars, rising slowly. Dunedin.—There were scattered hail showers yesterday, with intermittent sunshine and temperatures were cold, tlie piaximum being II degrees. There was.a tight- but chilly breeze from the south, and tile barometer continued to rise steadily to 1032.6 millibars.
