FROM DAY TO DAY

News And Notes From Town And Country

Ngaio Free Kindergarten. Gay little figures across the black stage curtain invited one to dance at thAinnuaf ball of the Ngaio Free Kindergarten, and charming child studies on the wall of the main hall continued the theme of work among the children. A large centrepiece radiated pink, green, and red streamers, and these colours were repeated in the roses twined round the lattice at each side of the stage. A full hall demonstrated the sympathy of the district with the commit-tees’-objectives, and the dance proved an outstanding success. Mrs. Zjmmerman wou the guessing competition. An exhibition of the latest dance steps was given by Mr. and Miss Thompson, who was presented with a posy of blue iris and jonquils. Mr. Hoult was M.C., and Mr. Langdale provided music between the dances. A delicious supper was served by the committees.

Social Activities Planned. A meeting of the younger set of the Wellington Red Cross Society was held in the Red Cross rooms on Thursday evening when arrangements were made for several future events on the club’s social programme. A supper committee was set up for the film evening to be held in Mr. Richard Andrew’s studio on August 17. Members of the committee are Misses Lorna Kessel Wanda Wyber, Lorna Akroyd, Nancy James. Dr. Walter Schmid, consul for Sweden, has consented to address the guests on his film of Sweden, and a novel note is to be introduced in the invitations which Mr. Richard Andrew is designing. It was decided to hold a games night on August 10, for members and friends, and a “Continental party” has been arranged for September 2.

Christchurch Hunt Club Races. The keen hunting folk of Canterbury, those who enjoy the sight of the hounds, the sound of the horn, and, most of all, the excitement of hunters taking fences and hedges iu their stride —were all present at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s annual race meeting at Riecartoh on Saturday. Their numbers were swelled by the real racing enthusiasts, the followers of form, the knowledgeable persons who were seeking information for the greater events of Grand National Week, and by a good leavening of the general public, specially women, who were enjoying the outing in comparatively pleasant conditions.

After the week of intensely cold weather, with biting winds, the weather improved, and on Saturday, though the sky was overcast for most of the day, the sun shone fitfully, and till late afternoon there was hardly any wind. Mrs. D. W. Westenra, wife of the president, was accompanied by her daughter, Miss Ann Westenra. Mrs. Gilbert Grigg, wife of the master of the hunt, was also present.

North Island visitors included Mrs. Russell Gifford Moore (Palmerston North), Mrs. Eric Loisel (Tolaga Bay), Mrs. Wrey Nolan (Gisborne), Miss Isohel Bennett (Masterton), Miss I. Lawson (Auckland).
