NOTED TRAINER DEAD
Mr. Frederick W. J. Tilley Dominion Special Service WANGANUI. July .31. The death occurred today of Mr. Frederick ML J. Tilley, of Fordell, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Tilley was for many years one of the leading horse trainers in the Dominion. It was in the early ’nineties that he first started as a trainer when he took charge of a horse named Return owned by the late Mr. R. Ross, and with whicji he won some good races. Later ho was appointed private trainer at Fordell for Mr. IV. McA. Dunean, with whom he was associated for 40 years. Among the many good horses which Mr. Tilley turned out were Frisco and Lady Lucy (New Zealand Cup winners), Mihm. Gang Away, Client. Tamatete, Tukia. Postillion and Glenross, which won between them almost every race of note in the Dominion. Among apprentices trained by Mr. Tilley was Maurice McCarten, former champion jockey of New Zealand and this season’s champion jockey of New South IVales. Some five years ago Mr. Tilley retired and took a trip to England, where he mot with an accident from the effects of which he suffered severely. Later he had a stroke which left him bedridden. There are two grown-up children, Miss Mabel Tilley and Mr. J. Tilley.
