Germany Leading Against Yugoslavia (Received July 30, 7.5 p.m.) ZAGREB, July 29. In the European zone Davis Cup final, Puncec (Yugoslavia) beat Goepfert (Germany), 6-3, 6-1, 6-0: Henkel (Germany) beat Mitic (Yugoslavia), 6-0, 6-1, 4-6, 64; and Henkel and Menzel (Germany )defeated Puncec and Kukuljevic (Yugoslavia), 9-7, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. AMERICAN ZONE Compromise On Venue NEW YORK, July 28. . The non-playing captain of the I American Davis Cup team, Mr. Walter Pate, has announced that the final of the American zone between Australia and Cuba will be played in Seabright Instead of Montreal, commencing on August 10. Cuba did not want to play in Montreal, and Australia refused to play in Havana, so they compromised. SEABRIGHT TOURNEY Quist And Miss Marble Win In The Doubles (Received July 30, 8.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 29. In the men’s singles semifinals at the Seabright tennis tournament today Parker beat Gilbert Hunt, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, 1-6, 6-1; and McNeil beat Grant, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals of the women’s singles Miss Helen Bernhard, an unseeded New York player, beat Miss Bundy, 6-2, 6-2, and Miss Workman beat Miss Canning, 7-9, 6-4, 6-2. In the women’s doubles final, Mrs. J. Fabyan and Miss Jacobs beat Mlle. Henrotin and Mme. Andrus, 6-3, 6-3. In the mixed doubles semifinal Quist and Miss Marble beat Riggs and Miss Betz, -1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The courts were extremely wet. The winners started poorly, making many errors. They twice collided during the first set, but improved thereafter. They benefited by Riggs’s insistence ou attempting to play the whole court, leaving openings to which Quist frequently volleyed. Quist and Miss Marble will meet Cook and Fabyan in the final tomorrow. Yesterday in. the quarter-finals, A. K. Quist (Australia) and Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.) beat F. X. Shields and Mrs. D. B. Andrus, 6-2, 8-6. Previously Quist an'd Mfcs Marble had beaten Moorhead and Mrs. Coleman, 6-1, 6-1. TRIUMPH IN CANADA Australians’ Three Finals (Received July 30, 8,10 p.m.) VANCOUVER, July 29. A record crowd saw the Australians sweep all before them in the finals of the Western Canadian tennis championships today. At the conclusion 11. Hopman and J. Bromwich were the centre of a remarkable ovation. Hopman declared that Bromwich’s form has never been better. In the singles final Bromwich beat Hopman, 6-2, 6-2, 6-8. 6-0, and In the doubles Anal Brornwich and Hopman beat Hall and Ready (California), 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. In the final of the mixed doubles Bromwich and Miss Eleanor Young beat William Hoggs and Mrs. E. Harper (California), 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. NEW BALL WANTED Players’ Threat To Strike NEW YORK, July 28. Candidates for the American Davis Cup team are threatening to strike over the 1939 championship tennis ball. Every ranking player competing in the Scabright tournament, with the exception of Frank Parker, today signed a petition to the United States Lawn Tenuis Association asking that the ball be changed tor one with a lighter nap, otherwise they declared they would refuse to compete in the eastern championships at Rye.
