In the men’s singles semifinals at the Seabright tennis tournament today Parker beat Gilbert Hunt, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, 1-6, 6-1; and McNeil beat Grant, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals of the women’s singles Miss Helen Bernhard, an unseeded New York player, beat Miss Bundy, 6-2, 6-2, and Miss Workman beat Miss Canning, 7-9, 6-4, 6-2. In the women’s doubles final, Mrs. J. Fabyan and Miss Jacobs beat Mlle. Henrotin and Mme. Andrus, 6-3, 6-3. In the mixed doubles semifinal Quist and Miss Marble beat Riggs and Miss Betz, -1-6, 6-3, 6-3. The courts were extremely wet. The winners started poorly, making many errors. They twice collided during the first set, but improved thereafter. They benefited by Riggs’s insistence ou attempting to play the whole court, leaving openings to which Quist frequently volleyed. Candidates for the American Davis Cup team are threatening to strike over the 1939 championship tennis ball. Every ranking player competing in the Scabright tournament, with the exception of Frank Parker, today signed a petition to the United States Lawn Tenuis Association asking that the ball be changed tor one with a lighter nap, otherwise they declared they would refuse to compete in the eastern championships at Rye.
