MUSICAL PROGRAMME AT ITALIAN SOCIETY

Dr. d’Acuhzo’, Consul for Italy, presided over the recent meeting of the Dante Alighieri Society, Wellington, when the clubrooms were well filled. Signora d’Acunzo, in peasant costume, gave, a monologue entitled “H cor■rente.” She acted the part of a peasant girl who tells in a humorous manner the story of her difficulty in trying to cross a stream, the bridge of which had been washed away, and how this led to her meeting with the man who eventually became her husband. The programme was mainly composed of musical items and was opened by Miss Fergus, who sang charmingly “italy” (Mendelssohn) and “Caro mio ben” (Giordana) ; Mr. Thomas gave two solos. “Panis Apgelicus” (Cesar Franck) and “Wher’er You Walk" (Handel). Both singers were very warmly applauded. Miss Fitzgerald acted as accompanist. Miss Lewis, accompanied by Mr. Brian McMillan, charmed those present with her singing, of “A tors e lui” I'Traviata), and “Lo! Here the Gentle Lark” (Bishop).' Having regard to the success of the community singing at the previous meeting of the society, and in answer to requests from those present on this occasion, the entertainment came to an end with the combined singing of “L’lnno a Roma” and “La p&nna nera,” Signor Comparing accompanied by Signora Comparini, taking the leadersliip of the singing, which was greatly enjoyed by' all.
