PETONE BOROUGH’S FINANCES

Review By Mayor BALANCE-SHEET “HIGHLY t SATISFACTORY” The 1938-39 balance-sheet was -highly satisfactory,” said the mayor, Mr. Loudon, in a financial statement presented to the Petone Borough Council last night. In the following report of the mayors statement figures for the 1937-38 hnaueial year are given in parentheses. The mayor said the district tund» credit was £2341 (£2219). The reserve account, £1651, did not have to bear any expenditure during the year, though it was expected that it would be called on to bear a large proportion of the £lOOl disbursed in connexion with the centennial. A new water pump costing £475 and a new rubbish conveyer, costing £550, were other heavy items of expenditure that had been met. Rates levied for the year were £36,622 (£35,008).' The total rates collected (current plus arrears) exceeded the total amount levied by £1328 (£1078). The percentage of the current rates collected was 90.865 (88.66). The outstanding rates had been reduced to £5039 from £6932. , , , A further amount of £ssu had been written off rates on property carrying State Advances mortgags and on property reverting back to the State as mortgagees, making a total now written off of £3970. The hospital account showed a credit balance of £384 (£188), which would be of slight assistance in meeting the greatlyincreased levy that was expected this year. Revenue from other sources reached expectations with the exception of the library receipts, which showed a further slight decrease. The Jackson Street widening loan had now been fully expended and the work completed. Through having to purchase Hepworth’s Building the district fund had been called on to bear the amount of £6lB, which would be refunded when a resale of the building had been negotiated. Permission had been obtained from the Loans Board to divert any sale money from the Jackson Street properties toward the cost of widening Udy Street, which it was expected would be undertaken this year. BOXING AND WRESTLING Programme To Aid Sports Queen There was a good attendance at the Labour Hall, Petone, last night for a programme of wrestling and boxing contests conducted by the Hutt Valley Boxing Association and Petone Wrestling Club on behalf of the sports queen, Miss Muriel Howe. Mr. R. Green refereed the wrestling and Mr. J. M. Stewart the boxing. Mr. E. J. Seagar was announcer. Results: — Wrestling.
