WANGANUI NOTES

Final Preparations For Today’s Racing Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, February 22. J. H. JelTerd arrived last night with Lord Midas and Baran. The latter was withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap because B. H. Morris was not available. He will be a runner on Saturday. Other arrivals yesterday included lied Rufus, Red Witch, Stern Chase, Lady Stella, The Smiler, and Morning Flight. The going tomorrow will be better than usual at this time of the year, as the track has been well watered and is well coated with grass. The weather was ideal this morning, but there was not much fast work done. Submission was given useful pacing. She will be ridden in the Juvenile Handicap by It. W. McTavisli. Dynasty will not be a starter. Baran and Lord Midas went half a mile together in 50 1-5, the former doing it easily. This was his first fast gallop since the spring. He is looking in great heart, and promises to be hard to beat on Saturday, Stern Chase moved very freely in putting in two rounds at from half to three-quarter pace. He is very fit. Lady Stella, a big, upstanding mare by Cockpit, was given a run over seven furlongs, the last six being done in 1.21. She has wou on the flat, and though not yet raced over hurdles, lias shown good jumping ability at shows. She is trained by V. Colello, who has been very successful with jumpers, and if she gets out early she may be bard to beat.

The Smiler, a maiden candidate, is a three-year-old by Laughing Prince— Acora. He has yet to race, but shaped nicely over three furlongs in 38 1-5. Red Witch went five furlongs in 1.4, hitting out well, and was anxious to go faster. . . , Brazen King (K. Chote) looking bright and well, went an easy seven furlongs, taking 1.20 for six and 1.34 for the full distance. He may find the going rather hard for him. as he moved rather tenderly on the outside of the course proper, where the going is not so easy as it will be closer in. Red Rufus and Morning Flight went six furlongs in l.lSls, and both hit out well. Parquet put in a gallop over seven furlongs, taking 1.32, and done it well within herself.

Tiger Gain and Jacynth were given working gallops. Submission will not be a runner on Saturday. Airing is a doubtful starter in the Hying, the going being too hard for him. All Spirit is another unlikely starter, as he went amiss a few days, ago. There is said to be a likelihood of Taitoru contesting the sprint, event in preference to the Cup. As Winsome Lu may not be a starter, the field may consist of eight, but it should be a good betting race, as the issue looks very open.
