WANGANUI RACES

Fields For Today INTERESTING CUP CONTEST Form And Prospects .(By The Watcher. 1 The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club will open today, and conclude on Saturday. Satisfactory fields are carded for this afternoon, when the principal event .will be the Wanganui Cup. This year the distance has been extended to a mile aud a half and 55 yards. The race has been run over varying distances, but from 1888 to 1935 it was a mile aud three-quarters, being reduced to a mile and a quarter in the latter year. The Wanganui course favours smart horses, but this year’s cup will give stayers a better chance. In common with most tracks, Wanganui could do with a good fall of raiu, but the cour.se proper is able to be watered, and the going there should be in good order. Betting will be single pool. The three horses above the minimum in the hurdle race, Entheos, Hanover and Red Rufus, are likely to occupy most attention. The others have either moderate form, or lack sufficient experience. There are one or two winning youngsters in the two-year-old race. Those likely to be in favour include Submission, who will be bl’acketed with Dynasty, La Bru, Varimond, Military Maid and Lord Midas. The maiden form is not out of the ordinary. Le Marquis may be. the favourite after his forward showings at Egmont, and Ruling Star ran like an improver at Woodville. The Victory Hack should be a good race, as it is possible to give the whole field chances. The distance being a mile and a quarter, it should suit horses that run on a bit, like Dark Eagle, Amatory and Mataroa. The cup contest will be an interesting one. Horses that have shown ability over the distance, like The Bigot and Siegmund, will be in demand, specially Siegmund after his return to form. The track might not suit him over well, but the distance will help. Wotan is a winner on the track, and must be considered, though he hag not run too well in recent starts. Brazen King might improve with his racing at Egmont, and the best of the others may be Rustem. In the Tayforth Hack the two recent winners, War Lap and White Gold, may find most favour. In the Petre Hack Red Cat will have to be considered, for all her weight. Ecstatic, Trebor, Amoroso, Pretty Lass, Gold Petal and Jacynth have all shown up in recent starts. Laughing Lass and Amigo look likely in the Flying Handicap, where Taitoru may suprise, as he did at Egmont, and Sporting Gift must have a chance. The following horses may be suported in their engagements : —■ Westmere Hurdles. —Hanover and Entheos. Juvenile Handicap.—La Bru and Varimond. Kai Iwi Maiden.—Le Marquis and Ruling Star. Victory Hack. —Dark Eagle and Mataroa. Wanganui Cup.—Siegmund and The Bigot (or Wotan). Tayforth Hack.—War Lap and White Gold. Petre Hack.—Ecstatic iind Amoroso. Flying Handicap.—Laughing Lass and Amigo. The card is as follows. 12.— WESTMERE HACK HURDLES, of £l3O.

An Unusual Story. The transfer of High Caste, Disdain and Stretto to Australia last month was achieved in an unusual way through the efforts of the trainer, the former jockey, R. S. Bagby Isays a Melbourne exchange). Bagbyattempts to get money for his trip to Australia at first failed because of the Government’s new monetary policy. It was the Otranto on a cruise to Auckland that gave Bagby the idea of exchanging his New Zealand money with Australian tourists. As the visit of the Otranto was limited to a day, most of the tourists required only £1 to £2 of New Zealand money. Bagby and his friends approached the passengers, and, in small amounts, soon changed sufficient money to enable High Caste and his two companions to be shipped to Melbourne. Bagby laughed as he referred to hie unwieldy bundle of small Australian notes. Unlese some modification of the New Zealand Government’s monetary restrictions are made, Australian racegoers are not likely to see many other New Zealand horses race in Australia this year. If High Caste and bis stablemates are successful in Australia, or they are sold ,the money must be returned to New Zealand. Answers to Correspondents. “Cora,” Wellington: (1) £3/7/- (2) £l/15/6.
