FRANCE TESTS HER DEFENCES
1 Combined Italo-German Attack Simulated MANOEUVRES OVER BORDER TOWNS (Received February 22, 1 a.m.) PARTS, February 21. France’s eastern border, including the Maginot Dine and the fortified cities of Metz and Thionvilie will bo blacked out on the evening of February 22 for passive defence exercises, approximating conditions of a military attack from Germany. Planes will attack the Maginot Line and test antiaircraft defences. Similar manoeuvres occurred at Lyons last night, based on the theory of an attack across the Alps to central France. It is understood that the operations ;ire destined to give the General Staff an indication of the country’s vulnerability against a combined Italo-Ger-man 'attack.
