Soap And Candle Workers EMPLOYERS’ APPLICATION An application by the employers for a Dominion award to cover workers employed by soap manufacturers came liefore Mr. M. J. Reardon, Conciliation Commissioner, in Wellington yesterday. The hearing was taken in committee, the parties adjourning, after consideration of the claims and counter-claims, till tomorrow. Private conferences are to be held today. Mr. T. O. Bishop appeared for the emplojvrs amt Mr. W. E. Sill for the workers. Application was made by Mr. J. L. Tucker for the Wellington Soap and Candle Workers’ Union to be left out of the dispute. It was stated that the union already had a date for a hearing by the Court of Arbitration. Phe interpretation of the Dominion dispute did not give the union the coverage It required and no counter-proposals had been entered. .Mr. Bishop said he understood that > at the conciliation council meeting in the Wellington dispute, the intention of the employers to make a Dominion award had been macle- known. It was hoped that Wellington would come into the dispute. Mr. Bishop said that the Wellington employees could enter their counter-proposals for their recent dispute in the present dispute. The employees’ assessors adjourned to consider the position, and the Wellington workers eventually decided to enter the dispute.
