OBITUARY

Mr. J. Fatt A popular resident of Waikanae Beach, Mr. J. Fatt, died in Palmerston North Hospital recently at the age of 84 years. Mr. Fatt had a particularly interesting life, serving for 12 years with the Imperial Army. Joining' tne Nineteenth Hussars (later known as “Queen Alexandra’s Own”), in 1873, Mr. Fatt saw active service for seven years, including four years in the Sudan and Egypt under Sir Edward Wolseley, afterward Lord Wolseley The late Lord Kitchener joined up with the regiment as a junior officer while if was on service in the Sudan. Mr. Fatt was also stationed with Ins regiment for three years in Ireland. While in the Sudan the regiment took part iu a number of engagements, including the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Mr. Fatt attained the rank of staff ser-geant-major, was fencing instructor for his regiment, and also riding-master. He was recognized as one of the best horsemen in his- regiment.
