FORM IN THE SOUTH

Boswell’s Fine Record Dominion Special Service. INVERCARGILL, January 23. The three placed horses in the Wairio ■Cup—•Boswell, Turaki, and Bow Street, were all sired by Baliboa. With the purchase of Siegfried by Mr. A. Chisholm, Otautau, it is likely that Salmagundi will be sent to Christchurch for a season. Possum looked far from right when produced in the Forde Steeplechase on Saturday, and his was a poor showing. Though he jumped soundly, he was always labouring in the rear, and for a Great Western Steeplechase winner something much better was expected. Ashaway went his best race for some time when he finished third to Foxlove and Amelita. He finished with a great burst from the back, and looks like regaining his best form. Viking appears to have lost form. He had every chance in his race at Wairio, as he was first into the straight, but stopperl badly in the run home. The Lord 'Warden gelding usually stays much better thau this. Rippen Surprises. Kippen was the best-eonditioned horse produced among the novices at Wairio on Saturday, and he scored one of the most comfortable wins of the day. Now a four-year-old, tlie Woodend gelding has furnished into a tine type of galloper, and he looks like racing right up to. the good form of his full relatives, Beam ami Cintilla. Loeltie River proved himself a better galloper than he has been given credit lor by comfortably beating a useful hack field over a mile. Earlier in bis career he displayer] plenty of ability, but was nor always reliable with it. but for H. Morton ho has raced very solidly from six turlongs to a mile. His Wairio success was most decisive, and over the las-t furlong Fleet Street had no chance with him. During the winter Lochie River was given a course of schooling, and this appears to have agreed with him. After Absence of Two Years. After an absence of almost two years from racing, Faculties returned to the winning list in his first attempt at Wairio on Saturday. When he had to be put aside because of injuries almost two years back. Faculties was regarded as one of tlie most promising young steeplechasers produced in the south for some time, and a big future was being predicted for him. The Panmure gelding is a dashing jumper, but bis success on Saturday may not indicate that he is right back to hie best as yet. He jumped as well as ever, but the field he beat was poor class, ami the journey only over two miles. Faculties has. however, only to. train on again to prove one of the best jumpers in these parts. It was a smart piece of horsemanship on the part of the apprentice, W. F. Ellis, which landed Foxlove a winner at Wairio. Half-way down the straight it looked ns though he had no chance of getting through between Amelita aud Viking, who was stopping. Foxlovo was taken through what appeared an impossible opening, anil he got up on the post. Good Win For Boswell. As was generally expected, Boswell had little difficulty in running out 10 furlongs in the Wairio Cup, aud the suc-

cess of the Balboa horse was one of the features of the day’s racing. On Saturday Boswell ran his last race in hack company, and lie promised to be one of the stars in local cup races from now on. Boswell is an out-:ind-out slayer, but. like most entires lie requires racing to bring him to his best. Boswell's career lias been marked by consistency, as he has never been flirt Iter back thau fourth in any race be has contested.
