MALTESE WOMEN'S GIFT
Presented To Mr. And Mrs. Neville Chamberlain (‘‘Dominion” Special Service: By Airmail.) LONDON, January 3. One of the Christinas presents which pleased Mr. and Airs. Neville Chamberlain the most was presented by the women of Malta in gratitude for the premier’s action during the recent crisis. So popular was this plan of a presentation that when the collectors went through the villages to gather funds, people were waiting on their doorsteps with their pennies. Though the subscription was limited to a maximum of 2/6, it was over-subscribed and the original idea of a modest gift had to be abandoned. As time was necessary to make new arrangements, the delay caused the presentation to be made on New Year’s Eve in the form of a cheque for £5O for the premier with the ho]>e that he would utilize it for the assistance of any charity which he might wish to help, and also a sliver model of a Goz.o sailing-boat in full rig, mounted on an ebony stand on which was inscribed: ‘‘ln graditude from the women of Malta—September, 1038.” For Mrs. Chamberlain was a lovely hand-made set of a dozen Maltese lace table mats, with embroidered linen table napkins trimmed with Maltese lace and a table cloth to match, all of which had been worked by forty' of the most renowned craftswomen of the island.
The present was sent by the Governor of Malta, at the request of the’ Ladies’ Committee, to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
