HAWKE’S B.AY GALLOPS

Brilliant Dash By Ijunter’s Eve Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, January 11. Contrary to expectations very few of the Wellington and Ashhurst engaged local horses were galloped on Saturday moruing.

The trainer, Sid Reid, left on Sunday with Kathbella, Ivar and Nora Gregor, for Woodville, where he will reremain a few days before going on to Trentham. Halley, who lias been in miuor places in most of his endeavours to date, is booked for the Wairoa meeting, where Mr. Frank Ormond each year sends one or two of his string. Halley litis morning had no trouble in running four furlongs in 51. A brilliant effort went to the credit of Hunter's Eve, who dashed over three furlongs ou the plough in 3-1. This time is very seldom recorded on this track, in fact it has only once been bettered. and that was by the great performer, The Hawk.

Master Cyklon continues- to please. Running seven furlongs ni 1.31 he was under slight restraint over the last furlong. ' Brunhild is definitely showing improvement and shaded Qtiilp over four furlongs in 504, with Hunting Mint, backward as yet, beaten off by six lengths. It is not often that Tiger Gain is allowed to record fast gallops on the track, but in company with Centrepoise he did once round in 1.40, with nothing to choose between the pair. This points to the hack possessing very fair in the Donro and xYshhurst hack cup in the immediate future.

Morning Flight, who is to be tried over a middle distance for the firSl time in the Gorge Hack Cup, this morning was sent once round with xYrabie. They passed the final peg together in 1.-13 L Sleeveless had a little too much speed for Buster Brown over four furlongs in 501. However, her form ’ hardly suggests her being more than an outside possibility for the company that she will have to contend with at Trentham.

Dainty Dell, who will race in the handicap event on the first day at Wellington but not the stakes, just shaded the improving Tidal Lass over four furlongf? in 49J on the course proper. Screen Lord took 41 for his three furlongs. Tycoon was too good for the novice, Bryda. covering four furlongs in 52, while Felicitation, going easily, was too solid for her younger sister, Tlinerangi, over the same course in 50J. I’arry and Misurina were companions over the schooling hurdles, with the latter going better. Parry, makes his first hurdle appearance at Ashhurst, but lack of experience is against him at present. Umpire was brought down from Waipukurau to Hastings to be schooled, but his exhibition was anything but inspiring. and. as two different trainers in the past have tried converting the Winning Flit gelding into a hurdler, his chances of developing that wnyNare not bright.

the aid of two sticks. He hopes to be riding again at the Taka, puna meeting at Auckland at the end of January. S. Wilson, the other jockey still on the injured list, has returned to his home at Trentham, but still has to take things quietly, and it will 'be some time before he is riding again.

Riding Engagements. ■Some riding engagements lor 1 rentham are:—4ll. N. Wiggins, Lady Lyric, Alunga, Counter Lunch, Beau V ite, Drachma, Hinerawe (the lust three on the second day). A. E. Bennet: Pen, Bronze Flight. W Doyle: Dorak. W. J McDowell: Youssipof. , No rider has been engaged yet for either Peerless or Dungarvan.

Former New Zealand Jockey Dead. The secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, Mr. H. R. Sellers, has received a cablegram from the South Australian Jockev Club, Adelaide, advising him that Norman Victor Ro w e, jockey, late of xYuckland, and latterly m Fiji, died in Adelaide on January 11. Rowe was last licensed in New Zealand m 19—' when he received his clearance for overseas.

Ellerslie Pair. The Ellerslie-trained horses Konneta and Shy have arrived at Trentham. Konneta whose special mission will be the Wellington Slakes, has not been required to do a great deal since racing at the summer carnival and has freshened up well. A brilliant beginner, she is likely io prove the hardest for Beanlivre to beat. Shy. who is a candidate for the Trentbani Highweight on the opening day, is in solid order.

What’s In a Name? The winner of the Novice Handicap at Dunedin, Atwa Rere, has given rise (o much comment principally because of the spelling of his name. It is correct as spelt above. 'The reason for the use of the “w” in the first half of the name is not clear and there is no explanation forthcoming from the owner-breeder. Mr. W. L. Milne, of Otikerama, near Gore. When the horse was registered, the name was printed in block letters to ensure that there was no mistake. If the name had been spelt Atua Rere, it would have been clear, as that means “running first” —a good tii> for a winner.

Trentham Riders. Riding engagements announced for the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham include: W. J. Broughton, 1 Smoke Screen, Red Cat. Homily (Cup), Indian Sun, Rustem, Taurangi (second day), Ruatiti; W. E. Pine, Golden Ridge; G. R. Tattersail. Sigurd, Catalogue, La Bru, Accomplice or Royal Star II; B. 11. Morris, Oratory.
