TRENTHAM WORK

Royal Star II Develops

Lameness

TE HERO IMPRESSES

Continued Rain Keeps Track Very Easy

( By

The Watcher.)

Continued broken weather with ']? II J-‘h more rain than is usual al this time o the year gives 'l.’rentliam more a spring I >an a summer appearance. Kain had (alien on' Friday night to make the track in excellent condition and the. outside ol the course proper, with the eting out Ot it, was available for work on -Saturday morning. It is years since Tree hain tracks have been so soft continuously at this period.

No Rider Yet for Far Land. The only visitors who have arrived for next week’s meeting besides the quartet of C. C. McCarthy’s, who have been quartered here since the holiday circuit, ate Far Land, in charge of A. McGregor, and Vitement, who has been brought down by A. Winder. McGregor quickly settled the Auckland report telegraphed this week that L. J. Ellis would ride Far Land, stating emphatically that no rider lias been engaged for Far Land and. none will be engaged till the morning of the race. Kilis, of course, has been engaged to ride Paper Slipper.

Royal Star II Lame. Royal Star II is now an unlikely starter in the Wellington Cup. He worked with xYccompliee and Sigurd. The trio did half a round at half pace and, ’alter running in Indian file with Royal Star II some four lengths from the leader, Sigurd, they joined up at the three furlongs. Royal -Star II ran home strongly ahead of Accomplice, the latter having run the last half-mile in 51 3-5. When Royal Star 11 pulled up he was lame and it is doubtful if his soreness will allow further preparation for the cup. P. Atkins, who has ridden the winner of the cup in each of the last two years, was to have ridden Royal Star 11, with G. R. Tattersall doing the other riding for the stable.

Arctic. King Impresses. Of the other cup horses working, Arctic King impressed and he is looking a picture at present. Y\ r ith F. Power up, he finished strongly after running the last half of a five furlongs gallop in 49 3-5.

Galteenfcre Works Well. G-alteemore (Bennett), Argentic (Burgess) and Peerless (W. Doyle) worked together over a mile, which took 1.43 l-o, the last half-mile in 51 3-5. Galteemore was in front, throughout and finished on a neck in front of Argentic. The latter did his best work over the lait bit. Galteemore is fit and, though not a winner, at • Wairarapa the second day, ran very impressively. Peerless tailed this pair off down the straight, but the unworthy effort is not cause for concern, as she is notoriously a lazy worker. She has many friends for her cup engagement.

Burgoss to Ride Argentic. P. Burgess has been engaged to ride Argentic in the Wellington Cup. His other mounts on the first day will be Te Hero and Lone Raider, Te Hero’s Brilliant Effort.

Te Hero provided some of the fireworks of the morning’s work. He was coaxed down the back stretch but, though inquisitive and restive, he was not on his worst behaviour. Then he ran home half a mile in a fraction better than 48 for the best gallop of the morning. It will be remembered that Te Hero, despite his waywardness, produced similar quality work just before the spring meeting this season at Trentham. He is looking a better horse than then in some respects. P. Burgess rode the colt in his work.

Far Land and Alunga. 'l’here was interest in the appearance of. Far Laud. With J. Melnally«-up he worked with Aluiiga (A. AV. Sim) and he was many lengths ahead at the end of a live furlongs gallop which took I.3—the last half-mile in 50. Alunga is galloping disappointingly. The gallop by Land was quite attractive and he looks very fit.

Babble, Haughty Winner and Dungarvan. Rabble (C. Fox), Haughty Winner (Mclnally) and Dungarvan (Doyle) finished in that order at the end of a seven furlongs gallop in 1.30 2-5, the last halfmile in 51. Rabble was always going well. Dungarvan was not finishing «o strongly as the others. L. J. Ellis will ride Haughty Winner and Rabble will be ridden by M. Caddyi No Rider For Seij&nund.

Selgmund, who is still without a riderin the Wellington Cup, had 11. A, Hawkings up for a gallop with Happy Heels (S. G. Robinson) over a mile, which took 1.4*5 2-5. Thi last half-mile took 54. iSeigmund was two lengths clear at the finish. Beaulivre in Good Order.

Beaulivre is working well. He easily accounted for Debham in a working halfmile.

Globe Trotter, an improver and a youngster who has impressed as likely to develop into something better than the average, worker! with Telamon.

Early Conqueror of Te Hero.. Vitement, who had a head victory over Te Hero to his credit last season, worked with Daregain, and the pair ran together for five furlongs, the last half-mile taking 52 4-5. Vitement haw had one start this season, and was unplaced.

Youngsters Show Paco. 'There was an interesting work out on the two-year-old track, when the three youngsters, Beau Vite (Doyle), Lady Drake (Foster) and Counter Lunch (Bennet) galloped together. They ran a very smart half-mile in about 48, Beau Vite being just ahead of Counter Lunch at the finish, with Lady Drake some lengths back. Much has been expected of Counter Lunch, but she has disappointed so far. She is very speedy, but flighty.

Other Work on Saturday. Punarua (It. L. Hitchen) and YoursTruly (L. T. Nesbitt), ran six together, with Punarua a length in frotit at the finish. The last half-mile was run in 51 3-5.

Dinerawe (Sim). Lustral (Foster) and Southern Blood (B. Sullivan), ran sev_en furlongs in 1.34, the last half-mile in 55. Hinerawe was half a length ahead of Lustra] at the finish, with Southern Blood a long way back. Roaming (A. Foster) alone ran six furlongs in 1.20, the last half-mile in 53. Improvident (C. C. MeC'arihvl ran a useful five, the last half in 53 2-5.

Revival (Power) was a length in front of Bisect (Burgers) at (he end of six furlongs in 1.21, the last half-mile in 53 -1-5. Lady Lyric (Hawkings) was four lengths clear of Twenty Grand at the end of six furlongs run in 1.11), the last halfmile in 52. Drachma (Foster) finished ahead ot Floral Robe (Bennet) over a similar distance, and the last half-mile took 51 2-5. Youssipof (Bower) took 1.22 for six furlongs. Raroa (D. Lamb) was going better than Cherokee (Burgess) after live furlongs, the last half-mile taking 52 4-5. Working on the plough. Good Sun (Hitchen) finished more strongly than Sunee (Nesbitt) at the end of a mile run in 1.4(5, the last half-mile in 53 2-5.

Goulsbro Recovering. C. G. Goulsibro, who received a broken leg when he was kicked at the start of a race at the Trentham spring meeting, was a spectator at the track on Saturday morning. His leg has been removed from the plaster, and he is able to walk with
