FIRE IN RIMUTAKA
Considerable Amount Of Damage To Cargo ,
GENERAL AVERAGE DECLARED

AUCKLAND, January 12. Further details received in Auckland concerning the outbreak of fire in the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rimutaka in the South Pacific early this week reveirl that a considerable amount of damage was caused to cargo in the hold which was ablaze. The upper ’tween deck of No. 3 hold, the deck iu which the fire started, is very’ seriously affected. Goods iu the lower 'tween deck and main hold are also damaged, probably partly through fire and also through water and chemicals.
The Rimutaka will arrive at Auckland from London tomorrow night, on her first voyage in the service. The liner will anchor in the stream on arrival and will berth at Queen’s Wharf on Saturday morning, when he r 285 passengers will disembark. Cabled advice was received from London by the Auckland office of the New Zealand Shipping Company , that a general average of 10 per cent, has been declared on cargo arriving by the Rimutaka consequent on the dirmage sustained by the tire in No. 3 hold. The liner curries a very heavy consignment of cargo from London for discharge at Auckland and Wellington.
