W. Keighley Retains Laykold Cup

(By

Rider.)

Last Saturday’s Laykold Cup cycle meeting at Petone proved very successful from the spectators’ point view, but a high wind prevailing, made the gomg very bard for the riders, causing several to retire in the classic five-mile race. tV. Keighley, the holder of the cup, thoroughly deserved his win, and his performance for the whole meeting was exceptional. Another rider worthy of mention in the cup race was C. Magurk. He was the only one to take lap about with Keighley. and though shaken off several times was only just beaten in the sprint and secured fourth place. Lower Hutt Meeting. At the Lower Hutt meeting on Monday evening, two cycling events were held, half-mile and a mile handicaps. Magurk caused a surprise by going away in the straight and beating T. Roe for first place, with .1. Wilson third. In the mile. T. Roe secured a first in a spirited tpssel with J. Wilson. Wilson has been riding consistently this season, and in the holiday meetings should prove successful. Petone Evening Races. In the evening meeting at Petone on Wednesday A Pennington put up a good performance to win half-mile. At present he is the fastest man off the mark in Wellington. J. Wilson again won the mile. G. Arney rode a solid race to secure first place in the three-mile handicap. Keighley, the "hero of Saturday’s meeting, seemed to have a night off aud was unplaced.
