FINE OF £7/10/-
Overlade. Motor-Lorry A line of £7/10/-, with costs 10/-, was imposed on John Francis Cleghorn, Pahiatha, by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Upper Hutt, yesterday, for operating a lorry carrying In excess of the licensed load. James Oliver, Masterton, a. driver employed by Cleghorn, was similarly charged.
Inspector 0. A. J. Petersou said the lorry was licensed in the £B/10/- a quarter fee class, but the load it had 'on when stopped required a licence fee of £lO/12/6. Cleghorn said the driver had instructions not to overload. The driver denied this. He bad charged them both, employer and driver, so that the Court could determine the responsibility. Cleghorn had previous convictions for this type of offence.
After fining Cleghorn, the magistrate permitted Oliver to withdraw his plea of guilty, and the charge against him was not proceeded with.
