EXHIBITION BUILDINGS WITHSTAND STORM

Structural Work Within 11 Days Of Completion

Pleasure at the manner in which the Centennial Exhibition buildings at Rongotai, despite their unfinished state, withstood the violence of last Saturday’s gale, was expressed at a meeting of the works committee yesterday. The architect, Mr. Edmund Anscombe, reported that the damage done was negligible. The damage to the bail'd shell was merely that two ribs, left finished but insufficiently braced, were blown over. They were not badly broken, and in any case they were not structural members of the building concerned. An area of one-third the total expanse of roof was now covered, and was in many places in an unfinished condition. None the less, not a single yard of roofing was blown off or shifted, nor did any leaks develop during the heavy rain. Mr. Anscombe reported further that building was proceeding rapidly, and was well up to schedule. If the weather was fine it was expected that the entire structural construction of the main buildings would be completed in the next two weeks.

The committee expressed its satisfaction.
