DISMISSAL OF OGPU CHIEF

Relief Of Russian Public

(Received December 10, 1.10 a.m.)

MOSCOW. December 9.

The public is relieved by the dismissal of the ruthless Ogpu chief. M. Nikolai Yezhoff, ‘‘the avenging sword of the revolution” and the greatest ‘‘purge exnort.” in favour of M. Stalin's fellowgorgian, M. Laurent! Beria. This is believed to portend a change in police methods, though the cessation of repressive measures is unlikely.

M. Yezhoff. who is tubercular, ostensibly resigned for health reasons, but he is not completely out of favour because he retains membership of the political bureau and the control commission. He succeeded M. Yagoda, who was shot as a traitor.

M. Beria is scholarly and is generally popular.
