PROVINCIAL MEMORIAL FOR WELLINGTON
Site In Petonc Approved By Centennial Council
TO COMMEMORATE FIRST SETTLERS’ LANDING
A decision that the only memorial to receive provincial status in Wellington would be the one in I’etone to commemorate the landing of the first settlors, was made by the Wellington Provincial Centennial Council at a meeting yesterday. Those present were: Messrs, 'f. C. A. Hislop (mayor of Wellington), chair-, man, C. M. Turrell (Wellington Harbour Board), .1. B- Yaldwyn I Hutt County Council). 'l'. .lordan (mayor of Maste’rlon), .1. W. Card (mayor of Featherston). D. McGregor (Wairarapa South County Council), W. JRogers (mayor of Wanganui). A. E. Mansion! (mayor of Palmerston North), T. L. Seddon (mayor of Feilding), P. W. Goldsmith (mayor of Levin). G. London (mayor of I’etone), A. W._Alulligan (secretary of national centennial organization), and W. 8. W'auehop, who was sent to Australia by the Government to observe Lhe New South Wales sesquicentennial celebrations. A .sub-committee was set up to advise the provincial committee on the type of memorial which should be creeled and the best method of flouncing its erection. A look-out on ML Victoria and a centennial park at Khandallali were approved for recommendation to the national council as local memorials for Wellington. The look-out will be roofed and on a frieze inside will be placed the names of important early settlers and similar inscriptions. It was decided to recommend to all local bodies in zone A2—mainly the Hutt Valley—that they should abandon their local memorials and concentrate on the one in I’etone.
Members of the council expressed the opinion that the memorial on Mt. Stewart, would have a very strong appeal to those in the Manawatu district, and it was hoped that local bodies would concentrate on this memorial and make it a worthy one. The original proposal for this memorial was that a tower should be erected at a cost of £3OOO and the area round it beautified.
A sports pavilion at Kowhai Park, Feilding and a centennial park at Marton, were approved as local memorials.
Proposals from the other zones were not in a sufficiently completed form to meet with the final approval of the council.
