An offer from the Wellington Baseball (Soft Ball) Association ,to subletto u. the Petone Recreation Ground Oval on December 26 and 27 and January 2 and rf, 1939, was declined by the Hutt \ a.ley Cricket Association at an executive meeting last night. The basobail association offered the oval at £2 a day on December 26 and January 2, and the u»e.of it on the other two days for which it is not entitled to charge. . . Mcmfbei's of the executive stated that while the offer was a sporting one, the cost would be prohibitive, as it;, would have to pay the Petone Borough Council for the other two days as well as meeting the expense of preparing the wicket. It wa« decided to advise the- Petone Borough Council, as well as the "baseball association, of the decision, and to inform the council that in the circumstances the association would have to play its representative cricket match bn some other ground. The chairman, Mr. J. la. Wilson, re ported that there bad been some response to the appeal for umpires. The association was in need of former _ players to give their services in umpiring and so assist the game, which had doubtless given them many years of pleasure. By coming forward they would retain an active interest ip cricket. A suggestion was made that where umpires were not available, the twelfth man in either team act in this capacity. It was reported that .because of a trotting meeting at Hutt Park on October 29, four wickets on that ground would not be available. It*was agreed that instead of selecting one particular grade to stand down ou that day, a ballot be taken or all grades to decide which should not play. In a ballot the C grade team was unsuccessful, so that no games in this rrade will be played on October 29.. It“was decided to cuter lour teams in the cricket carnival being conducted .by the Wellington association on Decemner '' It was agreed that full co-operation be given the Petone Borough Council in its loan .proposal of £10,600 for a new grandstand and' other amenities at the Recreation Ground. The chairman and Mr. W. Dougan were appointed to attend a meeting of representatives of sports bodies called by the mayor to discuss the project.
