CABARET NIGHT

Red. Cross Young People Organise Dance

The young people of Wellington seem to be unusually active this season in promoting dances for good causes. The delightful cabaret night held, at the Mayfair, in aid of the V'.A.D. section of the Red Cross Society, was organised by an energetic committee of more than 40 young people, with Mrs. J. Preston as secretary and Miss Betty Rendle assisting. The guests were received by Mrs. A. Gillies, wife of the president of the society, who was wearing a graceful fur-trimmed frock of amber wool delaine, with a paisley cashmere coat. Assisting her were Miss Amy Kane, iu mermaid blue crepe; Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who wore black crepe de chine with a black velvet coatee: Mrs. W. J. Wray, in a frock of midnight blue velvet. with a corsage spray of blue flowers : and Mrs. L. Angus, who was wearing black and gold taffeta. Mr. M. 8. Galloway, secretary of the society, was among those present, with Mrs. Galloway, who wore floral georgette. The ball-room had been gaily decorated with streamers and flowers, and in a corner recess comfortable chairs had been arranged for the hostesses and officials. The other guests gathered at. the many cabaret -tables about the room, but an excellent; orchestra kept them on their feet most of the evening. A feature of the dance was a mannequin parade, for which a red carpet was laid right round the room. Dinner and evening gowns designed by Madame Dawne were worn by the mannequins, and the parade concluded with an effective bridal group. Many of the gowns displayed were unusually striking. There was a black taffeta dinner gown with huge scarlet sleeves, and a wide Hungarian ruffle at the neck. Another gown of. white georgette had a long cape, studded with coloured pom-poms. A powderblue georgette dance frock had a full skirt studded with hand-cut flowers, and a black dinner gown was trimmed with white “traffic-lines” down the front and on the sleeves. Cocktail hats and veils, and luxurious furs were worn with the gowns.

The bridal group was of an. “allwhite” wedding. The bride wore an old world picture frock of white organza with a becoming short veil held in place with, white gardenias. Her bridesmaids were in full-skirted frocks of white georgette with matching boleros studded with violets. They carried bouquets in shades of mauve and pink. The parade was described by Mr. Guy Harrison, and incidental music was supplied by Miss Sally Page. The mannequins were Misses Betty Rendle, Lorna Adams, June Cummins, Sylvia McLaren, Joy Coad, Nathalie Pollock, Patricia McNamara, Kathleen Hayes, Rea Hammond, Margaret Paterson, Betty McLaren, Lorna Kessell, June Allison. Miss Patsy Ashbolt assisted to train them iu deportment.
