BRIDGES ELIMINATION SCHEME STARTED

Work At Upper Hutt STATE FINDING MOST OF LABOUR COST The Whiteman's Valley road bridges elimination scheme was started yesterday bv the Upper Hutt Borough Council, a climax to ten years of agitation and representation by residents of the ward. Tlie estimated expenditure is £2luo, ot which the State will provide most of the labour cost, estimated at £l4OO, and the council the balance of the labour cost and the materials. The creek, which has flowed down from the hills to' the road, will be. carried in a closed conduit, six feet by six, down to tiie front of the school and. parallel with tbe road on the school side, connecting with the original drain running parallel to the railway. 1 his will eliminate three of the bridges and two footpath bridges. A further, culvert, ten feet by five feet, will eliminate a fourth bridge. The fifth bridge on the Hutt Road side of the railway will remain, but will probably be improved. The work will take four to five months to complete and there will then be a full 66-foot road, but for the one remaining bridge, leading up the ' al 'oy road through Silverstream from the main highway opposite St. Patricks College. The job will be done by the men who have been engaged on the kerbing ami channelling £6OOO loan work which is now suspended for the rest of the winter. Six miles of this work has been finished, ■rod approximately one-third of the money expended. The original intention was to do 104 miles, but a s tbe work has been done so far at under the estimated cost it is probable that 20 miles will be possible.
