Motor Vehicles Licensed
The number of motor vehicles licensed on June 30 was 236,662, a decrease of 43,665 below the total on March 31, says the Monthly Abstract of Statistics. A decrease in licences in force is usual between March and June, since the licensing year ends on May 31 and some motorists do not immediately take out licences for the new licensing year. The latest figure (236,662) is substantially higher than that recorded on June 30, 1937, when 211,164 licences were in force.. An indication of road-usage is afforded by the statistics of motor spirit released from bond. Tlie total quantity in June was 7,490,000 gallons, a decrease of 831.000 gallons, or 10 per cent., below the total in May. but an increase of 8.6 per cent, above the total in June of last year (6,899,000 gallons).
