WORK IN FACTORIES
Reply To Statement By
Minister
“The Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong', is reported as slating that, as compared with when the Government came into office, another 20,0'M) are employed in factories,” says the Now Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation in a statement issued yesterday. “It is quite possible that until increasing costs killed the ability of local industry to compete with imports there was an increase (although we never have seen any official figures published in detail in support of the statement) of 25,000 workers in factories. The number of workers hi factories has been steadily declining during the past six months, and in many instances they are working on short time. Employment in factories will continue to decline until industry is restored to its former position of ability to compete with imports. Therefore the Minister would be well advised to analyse the existing position rather than rely on past history.’’
