CARTERTON DANCE
Returned Soldiers' Ball
Most successful was the annual ball of the Carterton Returned Soldiers’ Association, which was held at the King’s Theatre, Carterton, recently. The hall was gaily decorated with , flags and greenery, and as many of the dancers were in fancy dress, it was a colourful scene. Members of the womens committee were Mesdames Murray, G. Johnston, Callender, Chennels, King, Tapnn, Harding, Manley, Rabbits, Pinfold, Merrick, Hedley, Beere, Stubbs, Hopkins, Wakelyn, J. Johnston, Benge, G. Smith, and Thompson. The executive committee consisted of Messrs. A. T. Murray (chairman), D. Gibb Johnston (secretary), C. C. Callender, C. A. Chennell, C. Manley, F. Ta.plln, M. King, G. Rabbits, L. J. Harding, and H. Rathbone.
Prizes for the best fancy dress costume were awarded to Mr. and Mrs. R. Forbes, Miss Urwin, Miss Chapman, Mr. C. Hesp, and Mr. Lawrence. The prizes were presented by Mr. H. Brass, president of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association.
Among those present were Mr. D. L. Taverner, mayor of Carterton, and Mrs. Taverner, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Brass, Mr. A. Prentice (secretary of the Wairarapa R.S-A.), and Mrs. Prentice. The M.C.’s were Messrs F. Taplin, R. Wakelyn, and M. King. The Carterton Pipe Band was present, and played a slow waltz.
Children’s boots can be made waterproof by melting equal parts of beeswax and muttonfat and applying hot to the edges of each sole just where the stitching shows between the sole and upper.
