Vosseler Shield Contest To-morrow FORM REVIEWED

WHIPPER-IN.)

(By

This years harrier race for the 1 Ossi er Shield to-morrow promises to be tul of interest. In the firet place a record entry is assured; 113 entries had been received yesterday, and two clubs uho participated last year have yet to foi- " of the first 30 men to finish last season 20 have entered again. It will prove additionally interesting if these runners will better their last year s p acings l ie result hist year was: J. Riddmgton, G. Prosser, D. Pederson, A. L. Stevens, A. BoiXoio, F. Thorby, W. Owens S. Woodley. E. Garty and G. Foster (deadheat), E- Lovatt. R. Scrymgeour, L. Bruce. G. Appleby, L. Tunbndge, L. McCalman, T. Bartlett, M. Patterson, J. Murray. U. Sielye. A. G. Bagnall. C. Cairns. A. Congalton, J. McKinney. D. Walker R. Violich, C. Talbut, A. Burge, V. Smith and M'. Scoble, in that order. Two runners who should improve their last season’s showing are T. Bartlett (seventeenth) and D. M ulker (twentyfifth). who finished first and third respectively in the Dome Cup contest three weeks ago. Two notable absentees will be C. McCalman and A. G. Bagnall. For the inter-club contest Scottish, who finished 10 in the first 26 places and who have again entered the same team, should not be troubled. Olympic and Wellington look like running close tor second place.

The Course. . u «<. The course is almost the same as that used last season, the only alteration being that instead of traversing the golf links after going through the lupins the trail goes straight over the hill to Monorgan Hoad* ~ The course is as follows.: Start nt the western end of Lyall Bay beach, along the beach to Mon Point, up the road at Moa Point, a turn being made at the flag two-thirds of the way up the hill; the course then skirts the edge of the golt links, through the lupins and over the hill to Monorgan Road; across Broadway through the Quadrant to Ira Street, along Devonshire Road and Caledonia Street to Calabar Road; a turn mto Coutts Street and also at Kingsford Smith Street, then goew through the exhibition ground to Endeavour Street and down Onepu Road to complete the first lap. The second lap is the same except that when Onepu Road is reached the course crosses to Palm Avenue, and turns down Freyberg Street, the finish being at the beach end of Freyberg Street.

Scottish in Form. The Scottish club's long run from Eastbourne last 'Saturday served as a good preliminary to the Vosseler Shield, which the club will defend to-morrow. Mr. Vosseler, who pioneered the - harrier sport in Wellington, presented the tro, phy, and except for the 1936 season, when it was won by Brooklyn, the shield has been-held by Scottish since 1930. A. L. Stevens, T. Bartlett, and J. Ridlington are all in form, and the club's showing should be well up to the stinidtird of previous years.

University Club’s Entry. The University club is entering the following team:—R. Scrymgeour, F. O’Flynn, S. Farquhar, 11. Gretton, I. McLean. A. Burge, M’. Newell, McGlynn, Brewer, O'Kane, Palmer, De la Mare, M. Hoffman, D. Cairns, and Robershaw.

Methodist Club IGt. The Methodist runneiw are lit and keen, and the club is hopeful, of improving on the filth place it secured in the Dome Cup race. D. Walker. J. McKinney, and E. Patterson, can be "depended on to be well to the fore, although little special training for the event has been carried out. Other runners on whom the club will depend are A. Hurren, R. Ingram. F. Thorley, G. Harris, W. Scott, and K. Ayres.

Olympic Club’s Runners. The Olympic club have a strong entry, and place faith in the following team: — E. Lovatt, E. Richardson, D. Sunderland, O. Fisher, F. Reeves, A Shaw, o. Reid, G. Murray, J. Duignun, A. W. McNaught. .1. Blanchfield, H. Patrick, R. Garnham, P. Beecham. J. Bezer, A. B. Chappell, L. Myers, C. Campbell. J. Barber. A. Richardson, IM. Sunderland, R. Sharrock, J. Lonergan. A. O Connor, and A. Chandler.

Presbyterian Team. The following team will represent the Presbyterian club in the Vosseler Shield: G. Arcus, D. Morris, P. Bay, A. Congleton. S. Dick, C. Seeyle, M. Pumlrey, J. Armstrong, 11. Walls, F Norton, N. Jardine, E. Khull, IV. M ainwnght, M. Stephenson, and D. Wilson.

Baptist Club’s Progress. For a young club, the Baptist club has shown excellent progress, and it is reported that each week’s run sees new members arriving. Although the club has not the same number of experienced runners as saline other chibs in the M 01lington centre, the members are keen. Last Saturday the run was from Berhampore Church over a course of oix miles. The trail led up Rintoul Street South, along Levaud Street, up Houghton Valley Road, across the golf links, and then a stiff climb to the top of Mt. Atkinson. From there the runners swung down to the right on to the road, coming round the side of the hill to ascend again to the trig station ; thence down the road southward, down a very boggy valley into Mersey Street, and along the Parade to the corner of Luxford Street, from a run-in of 150 yards was held. Jhe result was:—Mai and McFadyen. first equal. Tonson third. All ran well, but the length of the run-in was insuflicient to provide a good finish.
