TROTTING EVENTS (By Overcheck.) Two races for light-harness horses will be run'at to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton County Haeing Club. Both have tilled well, and promise to provide stirring contCThe first of the two races is the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap. Fragment, who ran second to Faster .Kush at Timaru a short time ago, will probably be the first choice of investors, but several of the other runners have shown form of a very promising nature. Devotion is one of these, and his ability, to begin quickly should be a great help in such a large field. Of the others, Regal may receive most support as his recent third .to Attain and Gay Lady on the same course is sure to be remembered. In the Winchester Handicap Guncase is sure to be a well-supported candidate, as he was a recent winner at Timaru from that good young horse Aidershot. Attain and Privateer are also recent winners. Attain will have the services of M. Holmes, which should be helpful, but she will have to leave nothing to chance to beat the other pair.

FINAL RICCARTON GALLOPS

Nocturnus Looks Forward Dominion Special Service. 1 Ricciirton, June 24. A hard frost at Ricearton to-day somewhat delayed the start, of training operations but; with the inside of the trial gruss open for fast work, it was possible for all horses engaged at the Ashburton meeting to-morrow to have their final gallops, which were not practicable yesterday. The track was rather sticky but it provided satisfactory going. Most of the half-mile tasks were executed along the back stretch. The best time early was credited to the A aals gelding, Rex Maitland, who recorded 50 3-5. the first three’in 36 2-5. Later Garonne was always in front of Crack o’ Dawn in the same time. This stable trio will fulfil their engagements in the Maiden Stakes to-morrow. The last-named is a three-year-old filly by Night Raid from Rnwone, and will be useful with more time. She is owned by Dr. C. Nigel Smith, Sydney. and will be shipped to Randwiek next month.

The Masquerader run the same distance in 50 -1-5, and his stable-mate, Synthetic, recorded 51 1-5. Others were Merry March and Batuma in 52 2-5, Wagner in 53 2-5, and Mungatoon 53 4-5. Lady Leigh and The Wrecker attracted attention by reeling off five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, the last four in 52. Lady Aiiddlelmm and Supreme Court took 1.7, time that was equalled by Stealamarch, who finished clear of Rose of Tralee. Master Dingle bent Mazzini in 1.7 2-5.

in 1.51 4-5. Nocturnus appears to be very forward. He is to be taken over again bv A S. Ellis after to-morrow s imsdiug. Phenomenal and Miss Bluff were allowed to cover six furlongs in 1.23.
