LAWN TENNIS

Complaint Of “Pirating” Of Players The management committee oi the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, at its last meeting, was waited upon by a deputation from the Hutt Valley subassociation asking for support against Wellington Club’s “pirating ’ outstanding junior players from Hutt clubs by offers of free membership. The Wellington management committee took the view that nothing could be done unless concrete examples were given that such “pirating was being done. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association is to be asked for an explanation of why it was prepared to allow more advantageous terms to the Auckland association (financially the strongest in New Zealand, it was stated) than it gave to the Wellington rind Canterbury associations for the Quist exhibition matches. It was stated that the terms allowed Wellington and Canterbury were that those associations should take 25 per cent, of the gross gate, the New Zealand Association taking the remainder and paying expenses. A similar arrangement was made with the Auckland association, but before the matches were played the terms were altered to “Auckland take rill and pay all.” The treasurer, Mr. C. K. 11. Donnell, stated that an arrangement similar to that allowed Auckland would have been of considerable financial benefit to the Wellington association. A report on the East er _ tournament stated that there were 180 individual entries, necessitating the playing of 460 matches. The profit was about £3O. Appreciation was expressed of the way in which the groundsman, Mr. R. Linton, had worked during the holding of the tournament. The manager. Mr. G. Nevitt, said they' could not possibly have got through the matches as they did had it not been for the help rendered by Mr. Linton. BROUGHAM HILL CLUB The final of the mixed doubles championship of the Brougham Hill club was won by A. L. France and Miss J. Nicholls, who beat F. C. Pears and Miss Z. Castles, 6-3. 6-2. Miss Nicholls has thus won the three events, singles, doubles .and mixed doubles.
