UPPER HUTT ROADS

Kerbing And ChannellingWork Representations for the promotion of the kerbing and channelling work iu the west ward were made by Cr. F. Castle at last night’s meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council. Cr. Castle said he would like to see the work pushed forward with greater expedition. The mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, said he could answer this. Cr. Castle said he was not used to being badgered and interrupted until he had concluded what he had to say. Cr. J. 8. Baskett: The mayor is a past master at that. How long would it take to complete this £ll,OOO kerbing and channelling work? asked Cr. Castle. Whiteman’s Valley Road, Silverstream, carried a large volume of pedestrian traffic, and should be started. Cr. Baskett_said Gard Street, which led to 45 houses, should be done, too. -There were 60 to 70 miles of streets in the borough, each area agitating to have' its done first, said Cr. J. Purvis. Tlie main arterial road had to be done first. '

The men were working as well as any the borough had employed, sometimes- doing three chains a day, said Cr. F. P. Keys. The work had now progressed past the Heretaunga Post Office, and three miles had been completed to date.
