GUNFIRE AT FORT DORSET

Day And Night Target Practice Throughout this week artillery practice will be carried out by the Fort Dorset batteries commanding the mouth of Wellington harbour. Both day and night firing will take place, the latter with the aid of searchlights, and both light guns and heavy will be in action. Searchlight a'nd sighting practice was held at the end of last week and again last night. This evening, after light gunfire in the daytime, there will be searchlight firing practice. Tomorrow and on Thursday and Friday there will be both light and heavy gunfire in the daytime, and on Friday there will be another night shoot. On each occasion the Government steamer Janie Seddon will tow the target. With the searchlights scanning the water and the shells throwing up columns of spray, from the viewpoint of the steamer’s crew the display should prove spectacular. The light guns are only 12-pounders, but the heavy ones are six-inch Mark VII weapons, of a much more formidable calibre.
