DEFENCE OF CANADA
Less Than Half Australia’s
Appropriation SECURITY IN PACIFIC (Received March 25, 8.40 p.m.) Ottawa, March 24. The Minister of National Defence, Mr. lan Mackenzie, proposed to Parliament! a single year’s defence expenditure of 34,000,000 dollars to supplement last year’s 36,000,000 dollars. It is less than half Australia’s appropriation but it is an open secret thnt the Government expects to repeat and perhaps Increase the amount annually until the European situation improves. Mr. Mackenzie openly stated that Canada is depending for security in the Pacific on the presence of a friendly American fleet and on the British fleet for Atlantic security. He said Canada was buying two destroyers and 75 aeroplanes, increasing the annual training of the militia and constructing the second stage of the Pacific fortifications. The Minister made it obvious that the Dominion is relying for defence chiefly on guns and planes.
