BEAUTIFICATION OF WANGANUI

Special Meeting Of Society Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, March 25. With the object of stimulating an interest in the beautification of Wanganui, and if possible to suggest some scheme for improvements which may be carried out with the co-operation of the city gardener. Mr. T. Cox, a special meeting, convened by the Wanganui Beautifying Society, will be held on Tuesday night. Various aspects of the beautification of the city and suburbs will be discussed, and one of the matters to receive attention is the river foreshore on the city side, near the Town Bridge. This locality was improved last year when stone walls were constructed', but it is considered that this particular area, which still presents a drab appearance to visitors arriving at the city, should be planted with trees. A strip of waste grass near the Taupo ( Quay railway crossing, seen by all visitors arriving at Wanganui by rail, is also to receive consideration. The opinion has also been expressed that because of the wide streets there is no necessity for trees to be cut back as heavily as at present. It is pointed out that in many local ties rows of trees give added beauty to city and suburban streets, but some objection is being raised to the trees being cut so far back.

Though the meeting is being held primarily to consider the beautification of 'Wanganui, the proposed milling of 1800. acres of native bush at the head of the Ahu Ahu Stream, in the Waitotara County, and the correct spelling of Wanganui will also be discussed. The latter question is now being freely discussed in the city and opinions are divided as to whether Wanganui should be spelt with an “h”—Whanganui. believed be the correct Maori spelling.
