Wellington Candidates For Local Bodies APPROVED BY ELECTION COMMITTEE At a well-attended meeting of the Wellington Citizens’ Election Committee held last night, the following can-

didates were approved to represent the citizens’ "ticket” at the forthcoming local body elections. The names of present members are marked by an asterisk THE MAYORALTY. ♦Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. C.M.G, CITY COUNCIL. ♦Will Appleton. *M. Luckie. ,‘W. J. Gaudin. *R. A. Wright. *L. S- W. McKenzie. *W. Duncan. Malcolm Fraser. M. S. Galloway. T. Forsyth. . R. L. Macalister. . J. M. McLean. N. W. Nelson. M. G. McCaul. Hon. Vincent Ward, M.L.O. R. W. McVilly. Crs. John Burns and H. A. Huggins have announced that they are not seeking re-election. There are six candidates who have not stood for the council before. Mr. Malcolm Fraser was formerly Government Statistician. He is at present managing director of the Equitable Mortgage Company. Mr. J. M. McLean was formerly chief postmaster at Wellington. Mr. N. W. Nelson was formerly manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company. He has been chairman of the Wellington Fire Board for nine years. Mr. M. G. McCaul is a director of Phillips and Pike and a past-president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Mr. R. W. McVilly is a retired manager of Railways. He is president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The Hon. Vincent Ward, M.L.C., is a son of the late Sir Joseph Ward, and is a former member of Parliament. HARBOUR BOARD. Will Appleton. Captain S. Holm. ■Sir Charles Norwood. ♦Andrew Fletcher. Policy Announced. Following is the policy adopted for city council candidates:— The candidate, if elected, shall strive for prudent, economic and businesslike administration of the city’s affairs. Undertake not to support any proposal which will necessitate the rais ing of a municipal or local body loan unless such proposal and the intention to raise a loan has been sanctioned by a vote of ratepayers. Exemption—loans for work required to be carried out by the health authorities. Affirms the principle that no charge be inade upon the rates for the purpose of running trams, buses or any of the other municipal services classed as trading departments. Will oppose interference with depreciation and renewal funds.

Affirms the principle that each municipal trading department shall stand upon its own feet as a distinct entity, adopting sound business methods in its administration.

Will advocate carrying out all major municipal and local body works under the contract system. Will support improved and more rapid transport facilities for those suburbs not now well served in this respect, and to this end will Investigate modern transport development. Will investigate, and if thought advisable, support well-planned schemes for the improvement of public swimming baths and beach bathing facilities and conveniences.

Will investigate, with a view to simplification, all unnecessary anomalous or harassing by-laws. As a principle will oppose any undue extension of civic or local body interference with, and incursions into*. the sphere of private enterprise. The “ticket” for the hospital board and the policy will be announced next week. ,

The election of mayor, members of the city council, hospital board and harbour board is to take place on Wednesday, May 11. The date of the closing of nominations for the mayoralty and'city council has not yet been definitely fixed, but in all probability will be Wednesday, April 27.
