THALA BRILLIANT

Gallops At Awapuni Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 24. Sprinting tasks were allotted most of those horses given fast work at Awapuni this morning and, though the track was heavier than was the case yesterday, some smart times were recorded over short distances. The flags on the course proper were out 45 feet. The Hawke’s Bay hack Thala produced a brilliant burst of pace to run the fastest sprint of the morning, but some of the two-year-olds also pleased over three and four furlongs and Oratory and Laughing Lass put up the beet figures for six furlongs. Bluffer ran a good mile. ‘lhere were some good exhibitions given by the hurdlers over the' schooling fences, the best pairs being'Hirangi and Sunee and Forest Glow and Kentucky Song. Royal Limond also jumped well. Oratory (Howe) and Laughing Lass (Tattersail) were going well all the way to record 1.19 2-5 for their six furlongs. The pace was on from the outset, the first three furlongs being run in 39 and the initial half-mile in 52 2-5. Rarotonga ( Chaplin ( covered his. three furlongs smartly in 38 4-5 and hit out with plenty of freedom. Royal Chief (Eliott), after taking 14 Rarotonga (Chaplin) covered his three in 39 2-5. Rakahanga (Shaw) was slowly away from the half-mile, taking 14 for the first furlong, but she quickly gathered speed to ijin the next in 13 and come home full of running to cover the four furlongs in 52. It was a very attractive effort. Quadroon (Farland) worked over an easy mile and sprinted up the straight in 26 2-5. v Ivar (Campbell) attracted attention by slipping over his three furlongs in 38 2-5, for he was working on the bit and had a lot in hand.

Defaulter (Shaw) held too many guns for Sudan (Johnston) over their six furlongs, and in the concluding stage he was just coasting alongside her to run the journey in 1.20 2-5. The first three occupied 39 1-5 and the first half-mile 53. Sudan had the worst of the weights. Forest Glow (Parkes) outjumped Kentucky Song (Snvage) over a round of the schooling hurdles and they had a lot of pace on. ' . Sunee, ridden by the stable! horseman, was no match for Hirangi (McDowell) over a round of the hurdles.

Good Sun (Tattereallj finished too well for Hunting Cat (Callahan) over seven furlongs in 1.35. Good Sun worked particularly well, but Hunting Cat was not knocked about, Thala (Callahan) dashed over three furlongs in 37, the first furlong in 13 1-5. The track was getting faster at this stage, but it was a brilliant effort so far out from the rails. . Wildflower (Chaplin) and Big Dook (Broughton) were associated over six furlongs and galloped strongly all the way to run 1,20. They went evenly throughout, running the first three in 40. Royal Limond (McDonald) outjumped Tiger Bill (Kowhai) over a round of schooling hurdles and fenced better than he has done since coming to Awapuni. He evidently liked the sting out of the going. Bluffer (Johnston) drew right away from Warehi (Chaplin) in the straight to beat her companion by four lengths in recording 1.49 4-5 for a mile. Old Surrey, Catalogue, Stretto, ■ Jack Tar, Scarf Dance. Icing, Minga and Olessamor all <Tid solid pacework. Florence Mills (Farland) ran her halfmile under restraint in 52 1-5, the first two in 27. 7 She hit out very well. Additional riding engagements for the meeting include: S. Wilson, Arctic King, Russian Ballet. Baldric; W. Doyle, Nereus; A. Bennet, Lucullus Lad, Alunga, Floral Robe; P. Atkins, Debham; W. J. McDowell. Knapp’s elect: L. J. Ellis, Galteemore; B. H.
