Thousands of men, women and children marched in a great mass demonstration in support o£ expropriation of the oil companies. They carried signs against the United States and shouted: “The grlngoes arc going." One group of workers earned a coffin placarded "Here lie the petro] companies." Virtually all industrial and commercial activities throughout Mexico were brought to a halt, while demonstrations occurred all over the country. Newspapers were not published and electric light and power wire cut off. President Cardenas, appearing on the balcony of the National Palace, was given a tremendous-ovation. President Cardenas sajd he had n 0 intention of abrogating the expropriation decree, despite diplomatic gestures. He asserted that Mexico faced no danger of armed intervention and reiterated that the Government would pay the companies expropriated in the near future.
