Wellington’s Suburban Wharves BIG VOLUME OF SHIPPING The extent of the shipping and cargo traffic at the “suburban wharves” within the Port of Wellington is not generally realised. At Miramar and Point Howard the bulk of the oil trade of the port is handled and the wharves at these places accommodate many large tankers during the course of a year. In addition, considerable quantities of coal and timber are handled at Miramar and Petone. The small wharf in Shelly Bay is used by vessels discharging explosives. Statistics of the shipping dealt with at the suburban wharves during the year ended September 30, 1937, are given by the harbourmaster, Captain P. S. Peterson, in his annual report to the Harbour Board as follows:— Miramar Wharf.—From English and foreign ports, 12 vessels with a net tonnage of 70,234 tons: from Australian and coastal ports, 144 vessels with a net tonnage of 73,594 tons; oil fuel hulks, 197 with a net tonnage of 159,012 tons; coal hulks, 5 with a net tonnage of 4357 tons; a total of 358 vessels with a net tonnage of 307,197 tons. Burnham Wharf (Miramar). —From English and foreign ports, 20 vessels with a net tonnage of 99,942 tons ; from Australian and coastal ports, 92 vessels with a net tonnage of 22,576 tons; oil fuel hulks, 12 vessels with a net tonnage of 2928 tons; launches, 1 with a net tonnage of 6 tons; a total of 125 vessels with a net tonnage of 125,452 tons.

Petone Wharf. —From coastal ports, 105 vessels with a net tonnage of 22,123. Point Howard Wharf. —From English and foreign ports, 17 vessels with a net tonnage of 92,048 tons. Shelly Bay Wharf. —From Australian and coastal ports, 18 vessels with a net tonnage of 1655 tons. The grand total for suburban wharves for the year was 623 vessels with, a net tonnage of 552,475 tons.
