Good Sheep Firm At Yesterday s Sales
Fine quality cattle sold well for firm prices at Johnsonville sale. The runners and vealers yarded were not up to standard, and values dropped by 5/- a head. Extra prime heavy, ewes met with keen competition at prices 5/- firmer, but most of the lamb yarding was poor and hard to sell.
Beef prices were still low at Westfield, although ox beet was firm. Sheep supplies were heavy and the quality good. Wethers decreased in value, but ewes were generally firm. Calf prices receded. Porkeis eased, but prime baconers met with a firm demand. Prices showed a surprising recovery at. Stortford Lodge, reaching the peak rates of a fortnight ago. An extra prime Shorthorn heifer brought £lO/2/6 and in the store section 30 well-grown Aberdeen Angus 30-month steers £B/5/-. An entry of 228 two-tooth store wethers made 23/10.
Fat sheep were firm on last week’s rates at Wanganui, but fat cows ex dairy were easier by about 20/-. Store pigs sold well at up to 23/-. The market for vealers eased slightly.
Heavy entries of sheep came forward at Addington, good ewes being in demand at improved rates. Good prime steers sold well, but poorer sorts were hard to quit. The good prices for fat pigs were maintained and store pigs firmed slightly.
The small yarding of fat cattle resulted in. a general improvement at Burnside, extra prime bullocks making to £lB/12/6. Vealers sold well at advanced rates. Prime ewes and wethers were in good demand. The small entry of fat pigs met keen competition,, prices being firm on last week’s rates.
