CLERICAL WORKERS & LABOUR PARTY

Auckland Union Decides Against Affiliation By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 23. By an overwhelming majority of 149 votes against 38, members of the Auckland Clerical -and Office Staff Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers decided to-night not to affiliate with the New Zealand Labour Party. It is understood the question was warmly debated and that interjections were fairly frequent. There was practically an equal number of men and women present. Inquiries made at the close of the meeting suggested that although the union is potentially one of the largest in the northern industrial district, members did not take very seriously the suggestion that they should ally themselves with the Labour Party and for that reason they did not attend. It was said shortly after the motion was put to 187 members who were present that a member wished to move an amendment that, instead of affiliating with the Labour Party, the union should associate itself with the National Party. It is believed the amendment was ruled out of order and that another member was of opinion the union should not become a unit in any political movement. There appears to have been general agreement on this point.
