WANGANUI HARBOUR MOLES

May Be Completed In June FENCE TO BE BUILT TO ARREST SAND-DRIFT Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, March 22. A report ou the progress made with the raising'-of the harbour moles at Castlecliff was submitted by the Wanganui Harbour Board’s consulting-engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson, at the monthly meet; ing of the board yesterday. The total amount of shell-rock supplied from the Kaiwhaiki quarries is 34,242 tons, oi which 17,540 tons were obtained by a contractor who was previously in charge of the work. “Approximately 5432 tons of concrete blocks have been placed on the moles, and 380 tons have been made and are ready for transport,” the engineer said. “Shingle to the extent of 800 cubic yards has been obtained from the river by the bucket dredge, and the manufacture of concrete blocks is being continued. Because of the necessity of overhauling the locomotive which is used for transporting material to the moles, the supply of shell-rock has been suspended for the past two weeks. In the meantime about 300 tons of small rock has been placed on the river training walls.. “It is anticipated that without undue interruptions the moles will be completed in June, and that approximately lbW tons of concrete blocks and 2000 tons ot shell-rock will be required to finish the work. The foreshore on the South Beach has built up considerably, and the South Spit is becoming more secure. It is desirable that fences be erected as soon as possible to arrest sand-drift. The engineer’s report was adopted, ami the board decided to carry out the erection of protective fences as suggested.
