MANAWATU TROTS

Improved Class Of Horse Entered Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 22. Substantially increased nominations are a feature of the Manawatu Trotting Club’s autumn meeting to be held at Awapuni next week, but what is more gratifying is the better class of horses engaged in all events. . This year the 13 furlongs race was de; leted and replaced by a two miles “slow handicap, which, however, is relatively faster than the former event. The field filled even better than expected, and the impression gained is that the longer race is more satisfactory from most owners points of view at this advanced stage of the season. Even more outside horses than usual have been nominated for the meeting, the Christchurch trainer, M. B. Edwards, being represented by the Wairare.pa Cup winner Zincali, Princess Beverley (who won a double at that meeting), Philario (who was also successful at Carterton), Zingarri, Thor, and Wee Potts. From that centre is also C. S. Donald with that consistent performer Marlene, as well as the Hutt Park winner, Jacaranda, and Savoldi, who showed a return to form on the Nelson circuit. Allan Holmes has Ace Pot engaged, this gelding being in good form with two wins to his credit this season and placings in his last three starts. Silver Letitia and Royal Grattan are also ill his team. Donald Dhu, who won the Wyndham Cup on Saturday from a 4.43 mark in 4.29, is the star member of the team of the Ashburton trainer, L. A. Maidens, who has also entered Sports Review. The latter has two wins and two placings to his credit this term. The Nelson trainer L. F. Berkett has nominated Welcome Guy, who won at Hutt Park, but was disqualified for galloping and placed second. As well, he will be represented by Tonee (placed at Carterton), Tristan and Tommy Boy. Of the Auckland contingent, the Otahuhu trainer A. W. Broughton is bringing the dual winner at Thames, Our War. as well as John’s Last and Bedford. The well-known Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, has the Thames winner Bexley Girl, and, in addition, Captain -Scott, Cavan Chief (who was twice second at the Manawatu spring meeting), Wrackless, and Chili Bean, who has been racing prominently. TARANAKI TROTS Nominations Close To-morrow Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Taranaki Trotting Club’s annual meeting will close with the secretary, Box 131, New Plymouth, to-morrow at 9 p.m. This meeting forms the second link of what is generally known as the 'West Coast circuit, which begins with the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, April 2. 'The Manawatu club has received splendid nominations and no doubt the majority of the horses engaged at Manawatu will compete at Taranaki. Tile Taranaki club has shown commendable initiative by increasing the stakes for the forthcoming meeting by £290, and no race will have a stake of under £lOO. The Taranaki Cup Handicap this year will have a stake of £3OO, including a cup valued at £2O. an increase of £lOO. The race is of two miles, ' and the class 4.42. This should ensure a strong field. Horses running into a place at Manawatu on April 2 may be renominated for a higher class at Taranaki. Such renominations will close with the secretary of the Manawatu club 15 minutes after the last race at Awapuni. English. The following has nothing to do witn racing, but it will be appreciated by all sports: —“A country rifle club recently had occasion to shift quarters from the old to a new range site, and employed a Chinese truck driver to do the necessary removal of target frames, etc. At the conclusion of the contract, the truck driver handed in the following statement of account :— 10 Goes. 10 Comes. At 2/6 a went, total £2/10/-.' which was duly passed for payment, paid, and passed the auditors.^without comment.
