Independent Candidates
Sir, —A s an old campaigner may I be allowed to point out to those concerned that now, if ever, there should be a straight-out contest in every _ constituency. The issue is clearly “Socialism, yes or no?” I think it was the second Lord Derby who said that Independents were people not to be depended on. It is distressing to see some able men not allying themselves to the National Party. There are, no doubt, men of independent thought who are not good team workers, but it must be apparent to everybody that the coming election is a vital issue, ami the future Government should be determined by choosing a majority on one side or the other. I believe that this is the view of men and women of all shades of opinion who have their “country's interest at heart.—l am, etc., J.D. Wanganui, March 21.
