MASSED BANDS

Colourful Display A display by Wellington massed blinds drew a crowd of nearly 4000 to the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. The scene was a colourful one, with the bright sunshine catching the polished instruments and lending added gaiety to the uniforms. Red Cross nurses were in attendance, half the proceeds of a collection going to the Red Cross organisation. The marching of the bands and the selections, both massed and individual, evoked enthusiastic applause. Unfortunately, the Institute Silver Band, which won the B grade aggregate and quickstep at the recent national contest. was not able to play the “Twentieth Century March” because of the absence of some of its members. The massed bands played "God Defend New Zealand,” and, in memory of the late Mr. T. Lindsay Buick, who was president of the Wellington Brass and Pipe Bands’ Association, the hymn “Abide With Me.” Lieutenant W. Bowman and Bandmaster J. King, of the Institute Silver Baud, were stationed on opposite sides of the ground to play a cornet duet, “Somewhere a Voice is Calling.” The bands which took part in the display were: The Institute Silver Band,' the Ifirst Battalion Wellington Regiment, Wellington Artillery, Legion of Frontiersmen, and First Battalion Pipe and Drums.
