WEEK-END YACHTING

Moffatt Cup to Wellesley; Impudence First Home

WARSHIP SERVES AS JUDGE’S BOX Centreboard yachts of the A claws raced for the Moffatt Cup at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club on Saturday afternoon. Sailing her first race since her return from Hobart, Clive Highet’s Impudence led the fleet home, but after her long spell out of water she was leaking a good deal, and with a nine-minute handicap Wellesley won the cup. As the high bows of the warship Leander, moored on the eastern side of Clyde Quay Wharf, screened the view, yacht club officials gladly accepted the invitation extended by the naval officers to make use of the warehip as starter’s and judge’s box. From it they obtained a much better view of the course than would have been possible from the wharf. The race started at 3 p.m. in a light southerly breeze. The course was from Clyde Quay Wharf to Coromandel, Dei'euce buoy, Coromandel and back to the finishing line off the Boat Harbour. This course was sailed by both classes. Sweepstake Abandoned TAINE CUP POINTS Three handicap events were sailed by .the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club on Saturday afternoon in a moderate southerly that dropped away to a light breeze later in the afternoon. The general sweepstake handicap for centreboarders was abandoned as there was some confusion concerning the course and only three borfts sailed across the line in the correct direction. The keeler race for the Bucholtz Cup was won by Marnnui, who finished more than half an hour before the second boat. The third and final race lor the 'Paine Cup was sailed by the Tauranga class and resulted in a win for Hudini Junior. The Taino Cup race was over a new course. The bouts started on the wind from the clubhouse, then went to the slip buoy, to Shag Point and back to the ’clubhouse; two laps completed the course. There were seven starters and the moderate southerly at the start of the race died away to a light breeze which just filled the sails. Hudini Junior won on handicap and was third to cross the line. Scamp led the way and finished one minute 22 seconds ahead of Matchbox, which was about the same distance ahead of Hudini Junior. A new.boat, Wee Willie. sailed for the first time.
