STUDENTS WELCOMED

Freshers' Dance At The University. A geometrically-radiaut sun rising beneath two spot lights and a replica of the morning star was the focal point of the decorations in the Victoria University College gymnasium last night when “freshers” were welcomed at the annual dance given by the students’ executive. Across the ceiling streamers were suspended in colours fading from the scarlet of the sunrise to the pale gold of early dawn. Round the wall, against a white frieze, black “bunnies” in silhouette disported themselves with the abandon of extreme youth, leaping over toadstools and dancing to the music of little black pixies, Willi an enthusiasm that could be achieved in the early morning. A new day was dawning for the freshers and the executive effectively reminded them of the fact.

Across one end of the wall “Welcome” was written in huge scarlet letters. Before the dance began the new students were introduced to the traditional college sougs. the words of which were flushed from a lantern on to a screen for their benefit. Later in the evening they had an opportunity of seeing some of the college hakas. In a brief speech, the president of the Students' Association, Air. R. IV, Edgley, welcomed the freshers and ui |B I them to participate in college activities outside the lecture-room. He told them of the students’ ambition to erect a new and much-needed building for these activities and that the ambition should be theirs also.

The dances were of .ae “Paul Jones” variety which involved much changing of partners so that the new students had ample opportunity to meet, not only each other, but the older students also.

Supper was seiwed downstairs where long white-covered tables had been decorated with streamers in the gold and scarlet shades of the rising sun.' The students’ executive, who were responsible for this very successful dance, included Misses Susie Saunders, Geraldine Kean. Helen Maysrnor, Joan Bacon; Messrs R. IV. Edgley, R. S. V. Simpson, J. B. Aimers, R. S. C. Agar, R. IV. Heine, P. G. Pasley and M. J. Mason.

Professor F. F. and Mrs. Miles, Professor and Airs. Gordon, Professor B. E. Alurphy, Dr. A. 0. and Airs. Keys, Dr. E. and Airs. Beaglehole, Air. Palmer and Aliss Ruth Reid, of Victoria University College, were among those present.
