LARGE MOTOR-TANKER
China Due In Port To-day
One of the largest vessels of her type to visit Wellington, the motor-tanker China is due to-day from Bahrein Island. via Auckland, and will berth at the Point Howard wharf. Under charter to the Associated Motorists Petrol Company. she brought 14,600 tons of motorspirit for New Zealand ports, which is. in the opinion of her master. Captain Kroger, the largest cargo purely of motor-spirit even carried by a tanker. The largest tanker ever to visit Wellington was the Atbelcrown. which in 1934 brought 18.000 tons of bulk fuel oil for the Union Company. Of this huge cargo. 16.600 tons was discharged here, the remainder being for Sourabaya. Built- in 1929 by the Furness Shipbuilding Company. Haverton-on-Tees. for the United Molasses Company, the Athelcrown has a gross tonnage of 11,999. and when she entered service was the world’s biggest tanker. Tlie China- which was launched only n few months ago from the famous Krupp yards at Kiel. Germany, lias a gross tonnage of 11.445. She is owned by the Standard Oil Company, and is under Panama registry.
